Building Sweet Futures, One Gingerbread House at a Time

Every December, Midland Fair Havens turns candy, frosting and gingerbread into one of the most fun and meaningful events of the season.

Guests gather around tables filled with endless candy, icing and gingerbread houses, creating festive keepsakes with help from cheerful volunteers dressed as “elves,” who keep supplies stocked, hot glue guns ready (when icing fails) and the experience running seamlessly.

It’s no surprise the ladies’ luncheon and family gingerbread event sell out within just a few hours each year.

But behind all the sugar is an even sweeter purpose.

Gingerbread Haven is the primary fundraiser for Midland Fair Havens, a nonprofit that supports single mothers by providing education, housing and a safe place to build a better future.

“Being a single mom is the toughest job in the world,” said Barry Thomas, a veteran “elf” and former Midland Fair Havens board member. “This gives them a safe place to grow and create a better life for their kids.”

Thomas said many of the women who come to Midland Fair Havens are coming out of difficult situations, sometimes even abusive relationships.

“This gives them a place to focus on themselves, to grow and become better, so they can be better parents and create stronger families for their kids,” he said.

For Midland Fair Havens board member Jamie Stallings, the event’s magic is simple.

“It’s fun for the parents. It’s fun for the children,” she said. “It helps such a wonderful organization…everybody wins.”

Now in his 12th year as an “elf,” Thomas said while Midland offers plenty of fundraisers — from luncheons and galas to clay shoots and golf tournaments — Gingerbread Haven stands out.

“This is different,” he said. “Everyone gets to sit around the table, decorate a gingerbread house, talk and visit. I imagine it’s a lot like old-fashioned quilting bees might have been with people coming together, having fun and doing it all for a good cause.”

A sweet tradition with a lasting impact, Gingerbread Haven continues to bring the Midland community together, one decorated house at a time.

The next Gingerbread Haven event is scheduled for December 8, 2026. For more information on registration, visit: mfh.org/gingerbread-haven.
